“I learned that we all have skills that can be used when planning a service project. We all have the capability to help others.”

While the focus of the Bronx Academy for Software Engineering (BASE)is computer science, the community service club is a space where students can gain different social, teamwork, and leadership skills as well as earn community service hours required for graduation. The team chose poverty as their focus and approached the topic by surveying the school to get a wider perspective. The survey responses helped the team to develop BaseTalks, where students were invited to pose questions and learn about the causes and effects of poverty. Throughout the year, the team formulated ways to get the community involved and listened to what other students thought about the issue of poverty.
